Baby chick sales increase as people look to self sustain during coronavirus crisis

NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH)– There is a whole lot of chirping going on at the Norwich Agway. 

Chicks, as well as bunnies, are Easter time favorites but the little chickens are even more popular this year and the growing interest has nothing to do with the holiday.

"It's a steady source of eggs," said Dan Troy of Lebanon. "I go out and get a couple eggs a day."

More and more people are looking to self sustain during this pandemic and this is one way they are trying to do that.

"I'll deem it the year of homesteading," said Jenn Pickford. "People are very eager to grow their own vegetables. I mean seed sales have been off the charts and then chickens are right behind them."

Technically the chicks were born Wednesday and they won't go on sale until Saturday. They are sold by at least the half dozen at a time.

Pickford expects they will all fly out of the store by 10 a.m. Saturday.

"If we could have had a daily supply of them, we would have sold them all day everyday," said Pickford.

"This little girl in four to six months will be laying eggs," said Shari Hewes, who owns Holdridge Home & Garden Showplace in Ledyard.

She is also seeing people flock to the store to pick up some of the baby chicks.

"We probably sold about 45 to 50 of them yesterday alone," said Hewes. "Which was probably one of the biggest days of sales that we've had for the chicks."

"Not toys," stressed Pickford. "Not toy. Not toys yes."

Pickford wants to remind people the cute little chicks are a commitment which will last well beyond Easter. Both stores have the supplies needed to house, feed, and care for them.
